New Year’s Eve Driving Safety Tips from AAA Carolinas

December 30, 2020

CHARLESTON, SC- People around the world are getting ready to celebrate the New Year, and AAA wants them to do so without putting themselves and others at risk on the road, according to ABCNEWS4.COM.  A spokesperson for the organization warned Carolinians to avoid kicking off 2020 with a tragedy.*

It is important to have a plan in place before drinking. There are plenty of options, including ride-sharing services and designated drivers, which can help everyone get home without putting themselves in danger.

Last year sixteen people died in crashes, and 549 were injured in New Year’s holiday accidents.

AAA advises making plans to get home well before you ever start the celebration. Planning ahead might mean making sure that you have downloaded and are familiar with a ride-sharing app. Keep tabs on who you are with, and do not let your friends or family ever drive after drinking.

If you are hosting a New Year’s party, make sure that your guests do not drive home intoxicated.  Offer non-alcoholic beverages for guests who are not drinking and may be designated drivers. Offer people a place to stay or arrange rides home with sober drivers for people who cannot drive.

In the event that you are on the road and see an erratic driver who you believe is intoxicated, call 911.

Also, when driving, remember that pedestrians on the street might also be under the influence.  Drunk pedestrians may not always follow traffic signals.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
