Timeline for Autonomous Vehicles Taking Longer than Expected
USA- The first cross-country trip in an autonomous vehicle occurred in 1995, according to PopularMechanics.com. The trip covered about 2,800 miles, and for 98 percent of the journey, the vehicle was in total control. The car traveled at 60-miles-per-hour on average and safely made its way from Pittsburgh to San Diego.*
Given that the technology existed in 1995, many people wonder why these vehicles are taking so long to make it onto the market.
The self-driving technology needs to improve the ability of autonomous vehicles to handle unexpected events on the road. Human drivers are not always predictable, and the driverless vehicles will eventually have to share roadways with impulsive, careless, and often distracted drivers. Some issues involve the vehicle sensor’s ability to tell when something is and is not a threat. Drivers typically know that a plastic bag will not harm their vehicle, but an autonomous vehicle may not. Automated technology is not yet skilled in making these types of determinations.
While some consumers are not yet confident in the technology, experts point out that new technology could save many lives. Beyond safety, traffic congestion and fuel usage could be reduced by driverless cars.
