Georgia Police Crack Down on Impaired Driving During the Holiday Season

December 27, 2019

ATLANTA - Officers held a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” press conference earlier this month.  The officers used the conference to inform the public that they would be out on the road during the holidays and would be vigilant about finding and arresting drunk drivers.*

Officers say they will not tolerate any cases of impaired driving and that everyone needs to arrange safe transportation options to and from holiday events in order to avoid the consequences of getting a DUI, or worse.

Drunk driving rates dropped significantly across the country over the last four decades, and yet more than 10,500 people lost their lives in drunk driving-related crashes last year. In 2018, 375 people died in alcohol related accidents in Georgia, indicating an increase in such deaths of about five percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that about 25 percent of people who died in car crashes last year in the state were involved in alcohol-related wrecks.

Nationally, 839 people died in drunk driving accidents over the month of December last year. Data shows that there were more fatalities during Christmas and New Year's Day than any other holiday period in 2018.  Police said that the holidays are meant to be joyful and that the “drive sober or get pulled over” initiative is intended to save lives and prevent tragedies.

Designated drivers, ride-shares, and taxis should be used rather than ever driving drunk.   If you suspect you see a drunk driver, contact the Georgia State Police or local police and report the incident.
