Georgia May Require Universal Seat belt Use by 2020

January 03, 2020

GEORGIA - Lawmakers in Georgia are considering a change to the state’s seat belt law, according to WTVY.COM. While the law does not currently require adults in the backseat of a vehicle to buckle up, the proposed amendment would require every vehicle occupant to use a seat belt regardless of their age or placement in the vehicle.*

An officer with the Georgia State Patrol reported that individuals in the back of a vehicle face the same level of risks as those in the front, and that backseat passengers not using restraints can easily be ejected from a car in a collision.

Alabama recently passed a similar law, and many are predicting that Georgia will follow suit in 2020.

In Georgia, like other states with primary seat belts laws, officers can pull a driver over if a front seat passenger, driver, or under-age passenger fails to wear a seat belt. When a seat belt law is a secondary offense, the police may only issue citations to drivers for seat belt law violations if the driver is first pulled over for another violation. States that have primary seat belt laws tend to have statistically higher levels of seat belt use. Drivers and adult front seat passengers must wear seat belts in the District of Columbia and all states except New Hampshire according to data collected by the CDC.
