The Offset Crash is One of the Deadliest

December 19, 2019

USA- Millions of car crashes occur in the United States every year, with tens of thousands tragically losing their lives as a result, according to GEARPATROL.COM.  As a result, driving is one of the most hazardous activities that people engage in on a regular basis.*

Manufacturers continue to improve the safety of their vehicles. Thanks to ongoing efforts to improve vehicle structure, people are sometimes able to survive even some of the most severe collisions. New evidence suggests that the type of frontal impact a vehicle is involved in can play a significant role in whether people live or die.

While a head-on impact straight into the front of another vehicle can be deadly, another form of a head on collision that can be even more fatal is an offset crash. In an offset crash, only 25 percent of a vehicle strikes another vehicle, or strikes a hard, stationary object, which causes the vehicle to pivot sharply.

If a car strikes another vehicle or object squarely in the front, the full crumple zone is activated, providing protection to the occupants. The crumple zone, generally where the engine is located, is designed to deform upon impact in order to absorb the energy from a crash. This helps to reduce the degree of injury or death to the occupants. However, if the side of the front is involved, then the vehicle's protections are compromised, and the full front of the car will not be engaged to absorb the impact.

A second factor that also makes these offset crashes extremely deadly is when a vehicle clips another vehicle, causing the vehicle to pivot suddenly. This can lead to cars spinning in a rotation. As a result, occupants in the vehicle may not hit the airbag and can be spun into a center console, window, or door. This can cause severe injuries.
