Auto Crash Statistics in the U.S.

November 23, 2019

USA - Ninety people lose their lives in car crashes every day across the United States, according to DRIVERKNOWLEDGE.com. Three million individuals sustain car crash-related injuries annually, with two million of those people sustaining permanent injury.

Everyone should know by now that seatbelts save lives. On average, the risk of dying in an auto accident drops by a whopping 45 percent just by taking a second to buckle up. The chances of suffering a severe injury are cut in half with just the proper use of a seatbelt. The chances of being thrown from a vehicle in an accident are 30 times higher for people who fail to use their seatbelts. Despite these astounding statistics, around one in every seven people still get into a car and choose not to use a seatbelt. If people universally used seatbelts, thousands of lives would be saved each year.

Alcohol is still a leading cause of deadly crashes. About 40 percent of fatal accidents involve a driver who is drunk. Drivers who violate the speed limit account for about 30 percent of all auto accident related fatalities with speeding amounting to approximately 33 percent of traffic fatalities.

Texting while behind the wheel, and other forms of distracted driving, account for many other crash related fatalities. Drivers who are texting increase their risks of being involved in a collision by about 23 times. Every day more than nine people die in crashes involving distracted drivers. Many people still think that taking their eyes off the road to glance at their phone is not a big problem. Yet, forty percent of teens have reported that they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger.  Reading a text message takes a driver's eyes off the road for approximately 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving the length of a football field at 55 mph, but blind.
