Georgia DOT and Scholastic Team Up for Safe Driving Initiative

November 07, 2019

GEORGIA – The Georgia Department of Transportation and Scholastic, a worldwide publishing company for children that produces educational materials, have teamed up to offer a safe driving initiative to students in the state, according to a news story posted online at

The campaign created by the two is called “Recognizing the Risk.” It is designed to give students, as well as teachers and parents, important information about the risks of distracted driving and distracted walking. Georgia DOT and Scholastic developed the initiative as an educational program aimed at middle school students that will span several years. It adds to the existing distracted driving and walking campaigns from Georgia DOT, which are called “Drive Alert Arrive Alive,” and “See & Be Seen.”

Through the program, middle school teachers across Georgia are able to provide students with numerous activities inside the classroom that discuss the dangers of using cell phones, texting, wearing headphones, or engaging in other distractions while driving a car or walking as a pedestrian. The students can collaborate with their teachers and parents on safer options to several driver and pedestrian scenarios.

Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said that the Georgia DOT and Scholastic are focused on changing course for the next generation of drivers to promote a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians.

“In 2018, 70 percent of the 1,514 fatalities on Georgia roads occurred as a result of distracted behavior, including 265 fatalities involving pedestrians,” McMurry said. “Georgia DOT is proud to partner with Scholastic in this crucial outreach program to inspire positive social behaviors among Georgia’s youth well before they obtain their driver’s license and get behind the wheel.” For more safety tips on driver and child passenger safety, visit
