Tragic Crash Kills One and Injures Six in Baldwin County, Alabama (AL)

May 20, 2020

BALDWIN COUNTY, AL- writes that a crash took place this week in Baldwin County on the Baldwin Beach Express. The incident involved three vehicles that collided in the early evening.*

The impact left one person, identified as a 62-year-old man, dead, and injured six other individuals. The report states that the incident took place when a 200 Chevrolet Silverado was heading southbound and when the driver appears to have lost control. Fox reports that the pickup truck entered the northbound lanes of traffic where it collided with two other vehicles. Reports did not state which vehicle the victim was traveling in at the time of the incident. The other six injured individuals are expected to recover from the crash. The name of the man killed in the collision has not been reported as police are working to notify his next of kin. The cause of the wreck is still being investigated.

Head-on collisions are not common and only cause around two percent of crashes in the United States. While these incidents do not often occur, when they do, they carry a high risk of fatalities. In fact, greater than one in ten deadly crashes is caused by a head-on impact. Road design can be constructed in a way to reduce the risk of a head-on collision taking place. For instance, medians are often installed in an effort to stop cars from traveling into the opposite lanes of traffic and colliding with oncoming vehicles. While it is true that cars can also strike a median, the impact involved in such a collision is typically far less severe than the consequences of a head-on impact.
