Fatal Accidents in Alabama Decline Due to Stay-at-Home Orders
MOBILE, AL - According to an online news article published on Macon.com, there is some optimistic news to report regarding the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The news report states that fewer people are dying in motor vehicle accidents in the state of Alabama. The state-mandated "stay-at-home orders" have kept drivers at home, resulting in fewer vehicles on the road.
According to statistics reported in the news report and provided by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, April saw a drop in the total number of fatal highway-related deaths. The number of fatal highway accidents is down 58% since the previous month.
Alabama State Troopers who patrol the city of Mobile, Alabama, have stated that there was only one fatal accident in April. The sudden drop in the number of accidents is unusual according to the news report, which quoted a state trooper spokesman.
An unfortunate consequence of less traffic on the roadways is the tendency of some drivers to travel at speeds well beyond the posted speed limits.
"It seems like the speeds are increasing on the highways," Lt. Joe Piggott, a spokesman for the Alabama State Troopers told WALA-TV. "We've clocked quite a few at triple digits."
