Bill Proposed to Ban Use of Hand-Held Electronics While Driving in Alabama

February 24, 2020

MONTGOMERY, AL- Distracted driving is a leading cause of car crashes. Smartphones have become one of the main culprits of driver distraction. The writes that a bill is being considered to outlaw the use of hand-held electronic devices, such as smartphones while driving. While texting and driving is already against the law, the bill would take that ban a step further by making other uses for cellphones also illegal while a person is operating a motor vehicle. Talking on a handheld device will also be prohibited in the state.*

The fines for violating the law would also increase under the new legislation. If the bill is passed, drivers who violate the law for the first time will be subject to a $100 penalty and will receive a two-point violation on their record. The second time a person violates the law, the fine will be doubled to $200, and two more points will be added to their driving record. Individuals who receive a third violation will owe $300, and three points will be put on their record. An exemption exists for contacting emergency services.

Hands-free connections, such as Bluetooth, will be allowed for making phone calls. The law was first proposed last year, but the lawmaker sponsoring the bill tabled it, and it was picked up by another legislator. If the bill is passed, the state will become the seventeenth in the country to ban the use of handheld devices while driving. Police stated that between 2015 and 2017, 8,296 collisions were the result of distracted motorists. Out of those thousands of wrecks, 43 caused fatalities.
