Tragic Evergreen Crash Killed One on Interstate 65

February 06, 2020

EVERGREEN, AL- writes that a two-vehicle wreck in Birmingham, Alabama cost the life of a 37-year-old man from Birmingham. The man was in a 2020 Jeep that collided with a 2014 Freightliner. The victim died at the scene of the wreck while the other motorist, a 36-year-old man from Mexico, did not sustain injuries.*

The incident took place on Interstate 65 near the town of Evergreen. Drivers traveling on the interstate were stuck for six hours while responders worked at the scene of the wreck.

Motorists caught on the road reported being stuck in standstill traffic for hours until the road finally cleared in the middle of the night.

Crashes involving large trucks are extremely dangerous and deadly. While other types of collisions have dropped over the years, large trucks have continued to be involved in more accidents each passing year. It is not clear why there are more of these incidents, although part of the problem could simply be that there are more of these vehicles on the road now than in the past. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that the number of deadly accidents dropped largely because of better crash avoidance systems that are now in many passenger vehicles. Systems that work to lower the number of crashes include those that alter drivers of cars in their blind spots or when they are approaching other vehicles too fast. Automatic braking technology may also be helping drivers avoid rear-end crashes. In the future, large trucks may benefit from the same systems leading to a greater reduction in overall traffic deaths. Newer models are being fitted with such technology, but it is too soon to say whether they will help keep road users safer.
