HINESVILLE, GA. – According to an online news report posted at wsav.com, a police officer was injured in a vehicle crash after a driver ran a red light on East Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville, Georgia. Georgia State Patrol is investigating, and the driver was cited in connection with the accident, according to the news report.*
The accident happened early in the morning where East Oglethorpe Highway intersects Leroy Coffer Highway. Georgia State Patrol and WSAV report that around 6 a.m., an officer with the Hinesville Police Department was traveling on East Oglethorpe, approaching the Leroy Coffer intersection. The report says the officer was off duty and on his way home.
Troopers say that at the intersection, the officer attempted to turn left, and a 2002 Dodge Ram traveling the opposite way on East Oglethorpe proceeded into the intersection at the same time. Troopers said the Dodge had a red light and failed to observe it, causing the front of the Dodge to crash into the passenger’s side of the officer’s vehicle.

The driver of the Dodge reportedly told authorities that he did not realize the traffic light was red until it was too late to avoid the crash. This driver was also not identified in the report, and it is not clear if he sustained any injuries. Troopers said that he was cited with failure to obey a traffic control device.
WSAV states that Troopers reported both the officer’s vehicle and the Dodge were totaled in the collision. It is not clear if the officer was in a marked police vehicle.
