Utah Chinese Travel Company Bus Crashes Killing 4 in Salt Lake City, Utah
SALT LAKE CITY, UT- Time.com writes that a Chinese travel company is now defending the driver of their tour bus after a deadly crash took the lives of four Chinese tourists and injured another 5. The collision took place in Utah. The driver of the bus was a new hire, and officials are now questioning whether he was qualified to operate the large vehicle. This was his first trip with the travel company.
The tour group is defending its licensing practice and stated that their tour bus was insured and hold the proper licenses and registrations.*
According to Utah Highway Patrol, it appears that the bus drifted off the side of the road and that the driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to fishtail and ultimately flip over. The bus struck a guardrail and then landed upright on its tires again. The impact with the guardrail caused severe damage to the middle of the bus. The four people killed were declared dead at the crash scene. Many of the injured were transported to a small local hospital. Some of the victims were also taken to area hospitals by helicopters. Several of the injured are still in critical condition.
The bus driver survived the crash and is cooperating with the authorities. There is no indication that he was impaired when the crash took place. The authorities said it could be just an accident, caused by nothing more than a momentary distraction or the driver taking his eyes off the roadway long enough for the vehicle to drift.
State Route 12 was shut down while various agencies investigated the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators to Utah to conduct an investigation of the accident as well.
