Injury-Causing Accident Reported on I-77 in Elkin, North Carolina

ELKIN, NC. – According to a news story posted online at, an injury-causing accident happened on Interstate 77 in Elkin, North Carolina. The extent of injuries sustained is not clear at this time, and authorities are still investigating. The collision caused all of I-77 to shut down, resulting in a traffic delay.*

The accident happened in the early evening, near mile marker 85 and CC camp road on I-77. It is not clear on which side of the interstate the accident took place. The news report says a traffic collision occurred, after which a vehicle fire broke out. The report did not say how many vehicles were involved in the accident or what kinds of vehicles were involved. No vehicle descriptions were included in the story. 

The WFMY website features videos taken by passersby that were posted to social media after the accident. The videos show that at least two vehicles were involved, and at least one of them was a tractor-trailer. Make or model information cannot be discerned. The video shows a large vehicle fire, fully engulfing two vehicles. The vehicles are pictured in the grassy median on the interstate.

WFMY says that injuries were confirmed as having occurred during the crash. It is unclear how many people were injured and how seriously the person or persons were injured. No one involved in the accident has been identified. 

North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene, and Troopers are handling the investigation. They did not say how the crash might have happened or whether one of the drivers was at fault. 

The collision caused I-77 to shut down for an unspecified period of time. Traffic was detoured onto Exit 93 to Zephyr Road during this time. Drivers were also urged to use Interstate 74 as an alternate route.
