Tractor-Trailer Crashes into Firetruck on I-20 in Douglas County, Georgia

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at, a tractor-trailer crashed into a firetruck on Interstate 20 in Douglas County, Georgia. The firetruck was responding to a prior accident on the interstate, according to the news report, and the crash resulted in the tragic death of one person.* 

The accident happened in the early morning hours, near the exit to Highway 92 on the westbound side of I-20. Douglas County officials and WSB-TV report that around 3 a.m., a crew with the Douglas County Fire Department was responding to a single-vehicle accident in the area, in which a Ford Mustang traveled off the roadway and rolled over into a wooded area. The circumstances surrounding this accident were not reported. 

One of the department’s ladder trucks was stopped in the slow lane of I-20 with two firefighters inside. That’s when authorities say a tractor-trailer traveling west crashed into the back of the firetruck. It is not clear what caused the accident. The report did not describe the scene, so it is unclear if responders had their lights flashing at the time.

WSB-TV reports that the driver of the tractor-trailer was extracted from the vehicle by emergency crews and tragically died at the scene. No identifying information about this driver was reported.

WSB-TV further reports that the driver of the Mustang from the prior accident was transported to a local hospital with injuries. This person was also not identified, and the extent of his or her injuries is not clear. 

No firefighters were injured in the accident, according to the report. Georgia State Patrol will be handling the investigation of the crash, and no further information has been released at this time. The accident resulted in closure of all lanes on I-20 West for more than six hours.
