One Person Tragically Dies in Columbia County, Florida Crash on Interstate 75

September 25, 2019

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at, the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that occurred on Interstate 75 South close to mile marker 414.*

Troopers were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident earlier this week. The accident involved two 18-wheelers and a passenger vehicle, per a lieutenant with the Florida Highway Patrol. He notes that "[t]here's a lot of road damage because the vehicles burned, it's going to be something the Department of Transportation has to evaluate.”

According to a preliminary investigation, the tractor-trailers were going northbound on Interstate 75 when one of the truck’s front tires blew out.  This caused the truck to slam into another tractor-trailer in the lane parallel to it. Then both of the 18-wheelers slammed into the guardrail in the center of the roadway.

A third 18-wheeler in the opposite lane heading south slammed into the second 18-wheeler, per a release from the Florida Highway Patrol.  Both of the trucks became engulfed in flames.  The first 18-wheeler, as a result of the impact of the crash, jackknifed across the southern-bound lanes.  A fourth vehicle, as it was approaching the crashes, hit a tree in order to avoid colliding with the trucks.  A person tragically died in the accidents. Another individual sustained serious injuries.

Per the lieutenant, "Once they give us the green light that the roads [are] okay to be opened back up, we are going to open it up," Riordan said. "We certainly don't like to keep the road closed any longer than we have to but you can see we've got a big scene here, very large, a lot of debris, a lot of damage, so we are going to be here for a while."

There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by local authorities.
