Sylvester, Georgia Community Seeks to Prevent Pedestrian Crashes after a Mother and Child were Hit Crossing a Highway

SYLVESTER, GA – According to an online news report at walb.com, people in Sylvester, Georgia are seeking answers following an accident with a mother and child who were attempting to cross a densely trafficked roadway.*

Many residents are looking for safer ways to go across the highway.  Residents in an apartment complex are divided as to what should be done to prevent pedestrian and vehicle accidents on the highway.

One resident called for a light and cross bridge to allow people to safely cross the highway.

Another resident argues that these ideas are futile because people are still going to do what they want to do.  In other words, the resident notes that “[p]eople are still gonna do what they want to. I’ve been here three years and they want to cross to go to Walmart, they gonna do that.”

A woman and her child were recently struck by a sports utility vehicle while attempting to cross an unmarked part of Highway 82 in Sylvester.  The mother and child were transported to a local hospital at the time of the accident.  The mother has already been discharged from the hospital while the one-year-old child remains hospitalized.  According to neighbors, it appears that she was walking back to the Kingsway Apartment complex when the accident occurred.

According to local residents, they indicate that individuals who shop at the store they often cross the highway quite often.

The Georgia State Patrol is currently conducting an investigation of the crash.  It is not clear whether charges will be filed against the driver who struck the mother and child.  This will be determined after the authorities complete their investigation. Authorities are working to complete their investigation as soon as possible.
