Bicyclist Tragically Killed by Cook County Transit Vehicle

VALDOSTA, GA – According to an online news report at, a bicyclist that was traveling on Old Clyattville Road was struck and tragically killed by a Cook County Transit vehicle.*

Authorities were dispatched to the scene that occurred off of Exit 13 Southbound when the Cook County Transit bus was attempting to turn right.  In the process, the bus struck and killed the bicyclist.  According to the Georgia State Patrol, the bicyclist has not been identified at this time and the accident remains under investigation. There are no further details on the accident.

The statistics regarding pedestrian and bicycle accidents are staggering.  In 2017, there were 783 bicyclists and nearly 6,000 pedestrians who died in accidents with vehicles in the United States.  These users of the road that are considered vulnerable account for an ever increasing share of the total fatalities in the United States: in 2003, pedestrians and bicyclists represented 12.6% of all traffic deaths, and in 2017, they accounted for 18.2% of deaths.  

Between 2008 and 2017, pedestrian and bicyclist deaths increased by over 30%.  During this same time period, total traffic deaths in the united states decreased by nearly 1%. 

Nationwide, the majority of pedestrian deaths (over 70%) and bicyclist deaths (nearly 60%) occurred outside of intersections.

Poorly lot areas are a significant factor in pedestrian deaths where three quarters of the fatalities that occur was due to darkness. Conversely, over 40% of bicyclist deaths happen in darkness.  The time of day also plays a role in causing deadly accidents.  During the hours of 6 pm and 9pm is when most pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities occur.

Research shows that many pedestrian and bicyclist deaths go unreported, so that means that as much as 55% of pedestrian and bicycle accidents may be missing from police-reported crash data.
