Changes Recommended for Dangerous Intersection in Columbia County, Georgia

September 22, 2019

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA – According to a news article at, changes are possibly to be made at a dangerous intersection in Columbia County, Georgia.*

Metal, car pieces, and glass are often seen at the intersection of Louisville and Columbia road due to the ever-increasing number of accidents.  One individual who witnessed one of the accidents indicated that "I saw the SUV sitting here on the back of the wrecker and it was smashed up pretty badly. I don't know how anybody survived that accident." This crash occurred late last week and involved a sports utility vehicle that crashed with a truck. Luckily, both individuals survived despite having little to no injuries.

A year before this accident, the witnessed noted that he saw a fatal accident involving a dump truck and a passenger vehicle.  At this same intersection, another fatal accident occurred, killing a state senator.

There are countless other accidents that occurred at the intersection, including one where a man’s vehicle overturned back in the spring.    "It was completely totaled," the accident victim said. "It was upside down. It was just a miracle."

Six years ago, another accident occurred at the same spot.  This crash involved a woman who sustained injuries after being struck by a vehicle.

"I truly hope government officials don't wait for a life to be lost to take action. In this case, we know for a fact that we have lost lives right here at this intersection. We're beyond that point," the witness of the above accidents stated. "Something needs to happen."

Per a Columbia County commissioner, speed, heavy traffic and inattention are at most to blame for the accidents that keep occurring at the intersection.  He further asserts that individuals are not aware of the inherent dangers and increasing number of accidents at the intersection, which by its very nature, is dangerous.

As a result of the above, another county commissioner states that Columbia County made a request to the Georgia Department of Transportation to place the intersection on its dangerous intersection list.  This authorizes them to evaluate it and determine the next steps moving forward.
