Pedestrian Tragically Killed in Accident on Powers Ferry Rd. in Cumberland, Georgia
CUMBERLAND, GA. – According to a news report posted online at northwestgeorgianews.com, a pedestrian was tragically killed in an accident on Powers Ferry Road in Cumberland, Georgia. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but officers have reportedly ruled out several potential contributing factors during their initial review of the case.*
The accident occurred late in the evening at the intersection with Wood Hollow Drive on Powers Ferry Road. This is close to the junction of Interstate 75 and Interstate 285. The Cobb County Police Department reports that around 9:15 p.m., a 2010 Mazda 6 was traveling north on the roadway and somehow struck a pedestrian. The report says the front driver’s side hit the pedestrian.
It is not clear where the pedestrian was walking at the time of the accident. Police said that the area of the road is not lit. The report says that the driver immediately stopped the vehicle and flagged down help. While officers have not determined the cause of the crash, a spokesperson for Cobb Police said that there was no evidence from preliminary investigation that speeding, distraction, or driver impairment were involved.
The Rome News-Tribune states that the pedestrian was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he tragically died. Officials identified the victim as a 69-year-old man from Marietta, Georgia.
The driver of the Mazda was identified as a 50-year-old man from Marietta. It is not clear if he was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The report did not say if anyone in the car was injured.
The accident is still under investigation by the Cobb County Police Department, and no additional information was provided in the report. Police officers reportedly said this was the sixth pedestrian fatality to occur in Cobb County in recent months.
