September 17, 2019

SYLVESTER, GA. – According to a news report published online at, a Georgia Department of Public Safety vehicle hit a woman and child on Highway 520 in Sylvester, Georgia. Both victims sustained injuries in the accident, according to the report, but the circumstances of the incident remain unclear.*

The accident happened in the morning, by the E-Z Corner gas station on Highway 520. Georgia State Patrol and WALB report that around 8:30 a.m., a woman and her child left the gas station and started to cross the highway. At the same time, a Motor Carrier Compliance Division vehicle was traveling east on the highway in the direction of Tifton, Georgia. The Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) is part of the Department of Public Safety.

Troopers report that while the woman and child were crossing the highway, the MCCD vehicle ran into them. The events leading to the accident are still not clear. An updated news report from WALB says that surveillance footage obtained from the gas station shows that the MCCD vehicle, an SUV of unknown make and model, slowed down as it approached the two pedestrians. The updated report indicates that the woman might have been pushing the child in a stroller.

WALB states that the woman and the child were injured in the accident. The child, who is reportedly a one-year-old girl, was taken to a hospital in Gainesville, Florida, by medical helicopter. She is reportedly in critical condition. The woman was transported to Phoebe and has reportedly been treated and released.
