Two Workers Tragically Die in Workplace Accident in Sterling Heights, Michigan

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – According to an online news report at, two employees were crushed by slabs of granite at a Sterling Heights, Michigan plant, per local police.* 

According to police, an employee at the plant called 911 in the mid-afternoon hours requesting emergency personnel to come to the scene of the accident that occurred at the Stone Warehouse of Michigan, which is located on the 7200 block of 19 Mile Road. 

According to officials, they initially thought that only one individual was trapped however, it was later discovered to be two people that were crushed by granite slabs.  The names of the victims, aged 60 and 28, have not been released.  The two individuals are described as a driver and worker at the warehouse.  Per the Sterling Heights Fire Department, neighboring granite facilities offered to use their cranes to remove the eleven slabs of granite that was trapping the victims.    

Emergency personnel evacuated the business as they attempted to remove the granite slabs from on top of the workers.  The circumstances that caused the slabs to fall on the workers is not known at this time. "It's a very tragic day for the employees.  They are a tight knit group," stated one worker.

Each of the granite slabs weighed about 1,000 pounds and were eight feet long and five feet wide.

The local fire department is going to be releasing a summary of how the accident occurred.  The plant was closed for the rest of the day following the accident.  Officials with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration were not able to be reached for comment.  This agency investigates accidents that occur at the workplace.

There are no further details on the accident at this time.  The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
