School Bus Crash in Benton County, Mississippi, Causes Multiple Injuries, One Fatality
BENTON COUNTY, MS. – According to an online news story reported at wmcactionnews5.com, a school bus crash that occurred in Benton County, Mississippi, caused one fatality and multiple injuries. The news report indicates that the driver of the bus was tragically killed, and eight students were injured.*
The accident occurred during the morning on Highway 72, near Whippoorwill Road in Benton County. Mississippi Highway Patrol and WMC report that at approximately 8 a.m., a school bus was traveling on the highway and somehow ran off the road. The bus then turned over onto its side. No other vehicles were involved. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident or stated what events might have led to the collision.
However, WMC reports that the superintendent of Benton County Schools, Steve Bostick, said that the driver of the bus, identified as a 63-year-old man, might have suffered a medical emergency, which led to the crash. The Benton County Coroner’s Office said that the driver was reported to have grabbed his chest and slumped over before the bus ran off the road. The coroner’s office believed he might have experienced a cardiac episode.
WMC reports that the driver of the bus was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Bostick said he had been a driver for the district for five years.
In addition, WMC reports that the eight children who were riding on the bus were injured in the accident. Four of the children airlifted from the scene, according to the report, and four were transported to a hospital by ambulance. All of the children were treated at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
The report identified one child as a thirteen-year-old girl and said that her stepfather reported she had a broken jaw and broken leg, among other injuries. None of the other students was identified.
