Driver in Fatal Calhoun Single-Vehicle Accident May Have Been Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
CALHOUN, GA – As reported in an online news article published by mdjonline.com, a driver killed in a motor vehicle early morning accident may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.*
According to Calhoun Police Department records, a 57-year-old Calhoun man involved in a fatal car accident may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time the accident happened. The accident occurred in the early morning when the 57-year-old man’s 2019 Toyota Tacoma crashed into a tree on the side of Erwin Street in Calhoun.
Reports indicate that the man was traveling east on Erwin Street when his vehicle left the road on the right side, slamming into a tree head-on. The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident upon arrival of first responders.
A Calhoun police officer had been flagged down by two people at the scene of the accident. The officer had to break open a window to the Tacoma as the vehicle was locked. The officer determined that the 57-year-old man was unconscious and not breathing. Once fire and rescue arrived, they took over the task of extracting the man from the vehicle. Unfortunately, the man was already deceased, and there was nothing more first responders could do.
The Calhoun Police Chief stated that items present in the Tacoma at the time of the accident made officers suspect that the 57-year-old deceased man may have been impaired when his vehicle slammed into a tree.
However, the police chief indicated that the department could not confirm whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs until the blood test results became available. There is no timeline for when to expect test results confirming what substances, if any, may have been present in the deceased man’s system.
