Moped Driver Sustains Fatal Injuries in Accident in Hildebran, North Carolina
HILDEBRAN, NC – According to an online news report at morganton.com, a driver of a moped was struck and killed by a vehicle earlier this week.*
The initial accident occurred in the early morning hours when a moped that was going eastbound on Old North Carolina Highway 10 close to Interstate 40. The driver of the moped had run a red light. As a result, the moped slammed into a Chevrolet Equinox that was turning off of Interstate 40 westbound, per the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the moped, as a result of the impact of the crash, was thrown from his bike. Witnesses, after calling 911, attempted to come to his aid.
Before emergency personnel came to the scene and after witnesses tried to help the moped driver, a Toyota 4Runner going eastbound on Old North Carolina Highway 10 slammed into the moped driver, who was still in the roadway. Witnesses were able to jump out of the way of the Toyota. The driver of the moped was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police were able to identify the moped driver but have not been able to contact his next-of-kin.
The street was dark and there was light fog at the time of the accident. The driver of the Toyota had a green light. According to one witness who attempted to render aid to the moped driver indicated that there were several cars that stopped where he was hit.
“There was quite a few cars coming up and they was stopped,” the witness said. “I heard somebody yell out, ‘stop, stop, stop,’ and I looked back and there was a person driving right through the intersection. I wish I could have had enough time to pull the man out of the way, but there just wasn’t enough time.”
The entrance and exit ramp of the intersection was shut down to traffic as law enforcement worked the scene. It is not clear whether the driver of the Toyota stopped after hitting the moped driver. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.
