Greyhound Bus Company and Driver Sued after Causing Accident Resulting in Injuries and Death

September 03, 2019

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — According to an online news report at, a second individual has filed a lawsuit against the Greyhound bus company (Greyhound Lines Inc.) and a driver who fell asleep before the bus left the roadway, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old girl.*

The accident occurred on New Year’s Eve back in 2017.  One individual who filed a lawsuit asserts that he should be awarded over $75,000 due to lost income and medical expenses after sustaining a neck and back injury. The man further claims that he was psychologically traumatized as a result of the crash.

Similar to a previous lawsuit that was filed last spring, this case alleges that the driver of the bus was sick and fatigued and should be been substituted.  The man who filed the lawsuit, a 57-year-old, has been unable to return to work as a gardener and laborer.  He regularly sees a counselor due to the trauma he sustained in the crash.  In fact, the man avoids driving in a vehicle as a result of the anguish he experiences.

"This was a big hit to him. It's changed his life fundamentally," the man’s lawyer noted.  Attorneys for the bus company and the driver, from Henderson, Nevada, have denied that they were negligent in causing the crash.

The lawyer for the driver and the company indicates that while the driver had a cold, it was not apparent that he was tired and should have been substituted with someone else.  The case was filed in a federal Utah court.

An attorney in a different filing against the driver and bus company asserts that the facts of the accident do not give rise to punitive damages. The man in this case sustained injuries to his face, ribs, leg, elbow as well as a traumatic brain injury. The man asserts that he has racked up over $500,000 in medical costs.
