Motor Vehicle Wreck in Cherokee County, South Carolina, Tragically Kills Driver

CHEROKEE COUNTY, SC. – According to a news report posted online at, a motor vehicle wreck that occurred in Cherokee County, South Carolina, tragically killed a driver. South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office are still investigating the collision, and officials have not yet identified the cause of the accident.*

The accident happened in the late afternoon on Corinth Road, less than 10 miles outside of Gaffney, South Carolina. South Carolina Highway Patrol and WYFF report that at approximately 3 p.m., a vehicle of unknown make and model was traveling in the area and somehow left the side of the road. Upon leaving the roadway, the vehicle crashed into a tree. 

The cause of the accident is not yet known. The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office reports, however, that the accident might have been related to a medical condition on the part of the driver. Cherokee County. Coroner Dennis Fowler said that investigators could not find evidence that the driver of the vehicle braked prior to the collision. This is what made him believe that a medical emergency could have been involved. 

WYFF reports that the driver of the vehicle was tragically killed in the collision. He was identified as a 53-year-old man from Greenville, South Carolina. It does not appear that anyone else was riding in the vehicle with the victim at the time of the accident. Fowler said that an autopsy would be performed to determine if the victim did experience a medical issue leading to the crash.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is also still investigating the accident. Troopers had not provided additional information at the time of the news report’s posting online. The report states that this is the 12th traffic fatality to occur in Cherokee County so far in 2019.
