The collision took place at the intersection of Means Street and Tech Parkway in Atlanta. A student was reportedly riding on an e-scooter in the area, and a driver ran into the scooter. The news report states that police officers found the driver of the car did not yield to the scooter. The company owning the scooter was not reported, nor were make and model for the car involved.

11 Alive reports that the student sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment. The extent of the student’s injuries is not clear. No identifying information on the student was included in the news report. The driver was also not identified, and it is unclear if the driver sustained any injuries in the collision.

The accident comes at a time when Atlanta officials and community members are in active discussions about how to handle dockless e-scooters in the city. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has restricted application of new permits for scooter companies in the city and has placed a limit on the hours the scooters can be used inside the city. As of mid-August, people cannot ride scooters from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The accident with the Georgia Tech student occurred one day after a town hall meeting in Atlanta, at which officials talked about e-scooters with residents. Many residents said that the city’s streets were the issue, not the scooters. They said that Atlanta’s streets were designed only for cars, which placed pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders at risk.
