Trucker Tragically Killed in Accident on U.S. 78 in Snellville, Georgia
SNELLVILLE, GA. – According to an online news report posted at 11alive.com, a truck driver was tragically killed in an accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 78 in Snellville, Georgia. Authorities say the accident occurred when the driver had to stop suddenly, and the metal beams his truck was carrying pushed through the cab.*
The incident happened near the crossing of State Route 124 and U.S. 78. The Snellville Police Department and 11 Alive report that a tractor-trailer was traveling east on the highway and had to make an abrupt stop. In braking suddenly, the heavy steel beams on the trailer of the truck became dislodged and slid forward.
Authorities say the beams crashed through the cab of the tractor-trailer, causing the driver to become pinned. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to the news report. The report did not say why the driver had to brake on the highway or why the beams became free. Investigators surmised that the load was not properly secured so as to prevent the beams from falling.
11 Alive reports that driver of the tractor-trailer was tragically killed in the accident. He was identified as a 76-year-old man from Columbus, Georgia. The report says his family members have been notified. It does not appear that any passengers were riding in the tractor-trailer with him when the incident occurred.
The Snellville Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and the Georgia Department of Public Safety are investigating the accident. They do not yet know what circumstances led to the tragedy, but they are working to assess the scene and gather any footage that might have been captured on nearby surveillance cameras. The intersection of State Route 124 and U.S. 78 was recently redesigned, but it is not clear if this had anything to do with the incident.
