Driver Tragically Killed in Left-Turn Collision on Fruitville Rd. in Sarasota County, Florida

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL. – According to a news report posted online at, a driver was tragically killed in a left-turn collision that occurred on Fruitville Road in Sarasota County, Florida. Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the crash and have released identifying information on the victim.*

The crash took place in the evening at the crossing of Fruitville Road with Arbor Oaks. Florida Highway Patrol and the Herald-Tribune report that at approximately 8:30 p.m., a Toyota Camry was traveling east on Fruitville Road, while a GMC Sierra was traveling west on the same roadway. At the intersection with Arbor Oaks, the driver of the Toyota attempted to make a left-hand turn. 

In making the turn, Troopers say the Toyota crossed into the path of the oncoming GMC, and the two vehicles ended up crashing into each other. The front of the GMC reportedly struck the passenger’s side of the Toyota. It is not yet clear why the Toyota driver attempted the turn before the road was clear. No factors potentially leading to the crash were listed in the news report. 

The Herald-Tribune reports that the driver of the Toyota sustained injuries in the crash and transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he tragically died. The news report identified him as a 65-year-old man from Sarasota, Florida. It does not appear that any passengers were riding in his vehicle at the time of the accident. 

The Herald-Tribune further reports that two people riding in the GMC were not injured. The driver was identified as a man from Myakka City, Florida, and the passenger was identified as a 24-year-old woman from Sarasota. 

Florida Highway Patrol is still completing its investigation of the accident. At the time that the report from the Herald-Tribune was posted online, no further details about the crash had been released.
