Man Tragically Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-20 in Richland County, South Carolina

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC. – According to an online news report posted at, a man was tragically killed in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 20 in Richland County, South Carolina. The circumstances surrounding the accident are not yet completely clear, and South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating.*

The accident happened in the early morning by mile marker 82 and the exit to Spears Creek Church Road. South Carolina Highway Patrol and The State report that a Ford SUV (model not reported) was stopped in one of the lanes on I-20. It is not clear what side of the interstate this was on or why the SUV was stopped in a lane of travel. The report says the SUV’s lights were not on at the time.

It is not clear how long the SUV had been parked on the interstate, but Troopers say a tractor-trailer traveling down the roadway ended up crashing into the back of it. The factors involved in the accident were not fully reported, and it is not known how the crash occurred. 

The State reports that the driver of the SUV, who was still inside the vehicle at the time of the collision, was tragically killed in the accident. He was identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as a 47-year-old man from West Columbia, South Carolina. The report says that he was the only person inside of the SUV when the collision happened. 

The State further reports that the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash. He or she was not identified. The report does not say whether this driver was the only occupant of the tractor-trailer. 

Troopers and the county coroner’s office are still investigating. At the time that the report from The State was posted online, no additional information was available.
