One Seriously Injured in Vehicle Crash on I-16 in Savannah, Georgia

SAVANNAH, GA. – According to a news report published online at, one person was seriously injured in a vehicle crash that happened on Interstate 16 in Savannah, Georgia. Investigators say that two vehicles collided in the accident, but they do not yet know all of the events surrounding the collision.*

The accident happened in the late afternoon, close to Chatham Parkway on the westbound side of I-16. The Savannah Police Department and WSAV report that at about 3 p.m., a tractor-trailer and a Hummer H3 were traveling west on the interstate in different lanes. Near Chatham Parkway, the Hummer reportedly changed lanes and entered the lane of the tractor-trailer. 

In changing lanes, the Hummer ended up crashing into the side of the tractor-trailer, with the area of impact close to the cab’s driver’s side door. The Hummer then went on to crash into a guardrail and roll through the westbound lanes of the interstate before finally coming to an uncontrolled stop. It is not clear at this time why the driver of the Hummer moved into the other lane while the tractor-trailer was present in its path. Authorities do not yet know the official cause of the crash. 

WSAV reports that the driver of the Hummer was injured in the crash and transported to Memorial Medical Center. He was identified as a 66-year-old man from Pooler, Georgia. His injuries are said to be serious. 

It is not clear if the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured in the accident. He was identified as a 28-year-old man from Savannah. The report did not say if passengers were riding in either of the vehicles. 

The Savannah Police Department is still investigating, and as of the time of the WSAV report’s publishing online, no additional information about the crash had been released by investigating officers.
