Student in Marietta, Georgia, Suffers Serious Hand Injury at School

August 27, 2019

MARIETTA, GA. – According to a news report posted online at northwestgeorgianews.com, a student at Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia, suffered a serious hand injury during an incident at the school. The student has reportedly been hospitalized, and the school has issued a statement about the incident.*

The incident took place in one of the girls’ bathrooms at the high school. School district officials and the Marietta Daily Journal report that a girl was inside the bathroom and had her hand inside the opening in the door hinge of a stall. That’s when another student reportedly closed the stall door, and the first student’s fingers became trapped in the opening.

The news report says the student was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital after staff members called 911 about the incident. Marietta Daily Journal says the student lost two fingertips on her left hand due to her injuries. The student was not identified in the report, and the report did not say what grade she is in at the high school.

The other student involved was also not identified, and her grade was also not reported. School district officials said that they did not anticipate any charges would be filed against this student or disciplinary proceedings initiated, as the incident did not appear “malicious or intentional,” according to school district spokesperson Jen Brock.

The Marietta Daily Journal notes the student is still hospitalized, and her parents are with her at the hospital. It is not clear when she will be released. No statement from the student or her parents was included in the news report.

The incident is still under investigation by school officials. At the time of the Marietta Daily Journal report’s posting online, no further information about the incident or the investigation had been released to the media.
