Motorcyclist Tragically Dies in Athens, Georgia Accident, 4 Cars Involved

August 24, 2019

ATHENS, GA – According to an online news report at onlineathens.com, a near accident by two vehicles caused the death of a motorcyclist last week, per an Athens-Clarke police report.*

Local police indicate that a Kia Optima driven by a woman, aged 28, made a wide right turn off of Jefferson River Road in the northerly lane.  This caused a 23-year old male driver from Statham, Georgia, already in that lane, to swerve in left to order to avoid a crash with the 28-year-old’s vehicle.

When the man swerved in his Toyota Corolla in the southerly lane, the motorcyclist, identified as a 22-year- old male, he locked down his brakes, according to a police report of the accident.

The motorcyclist lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into the man’s vehicle.  This caused the motorcyclist to be ejected into the path of a southerly Hyundai Accent that was operated by a 51-year-old woman, per the police report.

The motorcyclist died as a result of the accident. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 80% of all reported motorcycle accidents result in serious injury or death.  As such, there are ways to avoid being involved in a motorcycle accident, which are as follows:

  • Make sure you have proper gear. This means that you should wear long pants and jackets made of leather or another thick, protective gear.  It is also important that you wear gloves and boots that cover your ankles.

  • Be visible to other motorists.  Wear colors that are bright as well as reflective elements on your clothing and your motorcycle. Always have your headlights on at night.

  • Wear a full-faced Department of Transportation-approved helmet when riding. Make sure that your helmet has bright colors to be visible to other drivers.
