Two Seriously Injured After Boat Crash in Florida Keys
KEY LARGO, FL. – According to an online news story posted at usnews.com, two people were seriously injured in a boating crash that happened in the Florida Keys. It is not yet clear what led to the crash, but distraction while operating the boat might have played a role, according to the news report.*
The accident occurred during a weekend day near Key Largo, Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. News report that a boat crashed into a channel marker on the waterway, sending two of the people on the boat overboard. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer Bobby Dude said that the two people, along with a third person who was on the boat, were rescued by other boaters who were in the area.
Dude said that all three people were brought to the Ocean Reef Yacht Club, which is a private Key Largo community. Emergency responders met the boaters there and took two of them to a nearby hospital.
U.S. News reports that the two men who were taken to the hospital both had serious injuries. One of them was identified as a 70-year-old man, and the news report says he underwent surgery for leg injuries. The other person was identified as a 27-year-old man, who also reportedly underwent surgery for unknown injuries. The third person, identified as a male, was reportedly not injured in the accident.
The accident is still under investigation by local authorities. It appears that distraction could have contributed to the accident, based on a statement from one of the injured boaters. U.S. News states that the 70-year-old man was operating the boat at the time, and he reportedly told authorities that prior to the crash, he accelerated on plane and was not paying attention. No further information was reported in the news story.
