Vehicle Fatally Hits Moped Rider, Leaves Scene on Sandridge Rd. in Clay County, Florida

CLAY COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report posted at, a vehicle fatally hit a moped rider and then left the scene on Sandridge Road in Clay County, Florida. Authorities have classified the case as a hit-and-run and are asking for the public to call them with any information that could lead to an arrest.*

The accident occurred during the overnight hours on the stretch of Sandridge Road by U.S. Highway 17 and Village Square Boulevard. Florida Highway Patrol and First Coast News report that at about 2:30 a.m., emergency crews went to the scene on a call about a traffic accident. 

Authorities arrived to find that a vehicle had apparently struck a moped. Preliminary investigation at the scene caused authorities to believe that the vehicle hit the moped from behind, based on damage to the moped. The model of moped was a Suzuki. The vehicle was no longer at the scene when investigators arrived.

First Coast News reports that the moped rider tragically died at the scene. This person was not identified in the news report, and it is unclear if he or she was riding on the moped alone at the time of the accident. 

Following the accident, Florida Highway Patrol posted a message to social media alerting the public to the occurrence of the collision and asking for information from the community. No information about the driver of the vehicle has been reported. Florida Highway Patrol Troopers believe the vehicle is a small, black car that likely has damage to the front end. No additional information is available at this time. 

Troopers ask that anyone who might have information about the accident, the vehicle, or a suspect to contact them by calling *347. Tips can also be called in anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-TIPS.
