Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes into Hotel in Tampa, Florida
TAMPA, FL. – According to an online news report posted at wfla.com, a suspected drunk driver crashed into a hotel in Tampa, Florida. After the crash, the driver reportedly tried to flee the scene and was apprehended by authorities. WFLA states that the driver has been criminally charged in connection with the incident.*
The incident happened in the late evening by the Fairfield Inn and Suites (a Marriot hotel) on Lakeview Center Drive in Tampa. Florida Highway Patrol and WFLA report that at about 11:30 p.m., a vehicle was traveling on Interstate 4 and attempted to exit onto State Road 574. While driving eastbound on the ramp, the driver of the vehicle somehow lost control.
Troopers say the vehicle traveled off the roadway and through a ditch, then crashed through a chain fence. The vehicle then kept going and ended up crashing into the Fairfield Inn. It is not clear on what side of the hotel the accident took place. The report does not list a make or model for the vehicle and does not say if the hotel building was damaged in the collision.
Following the crash, the driver of the vehicle reportedly got out and tried to run away from the scene. However, authorities were able to catch up to him, and he was placed under arrest by a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy. WFLA reports that the driver, identified as a 40-year-old man from Tampa, has been charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
It is not clear if the driver or anyone else was injured in the crash. It does not appear that anyone else was riding in the vehicle with the suspect, but the report did not confirm that information. Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident, and no additional information was reported.
