Florida Teenager Exiting School Bus is Struck by Car, Sustaining Serious Injuries

August 20, 2019

MYAKKA, FL – As reported in an online news article published by, a 14-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a car while exiting a school bus.*

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) accident report, a 14-year-old boy is in serious condition following an accident involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle driven by a 19-year-old woman.  The accident happened in the early morning at the intersection of Gopher Hill Road and Verna Bethany Road in Manatee County.

The school bus stopped at the intersection to let the children out who were crossing Verna Bethany Road.  The school bus had flashing lights on and had the “stop-arm” extended to alert drivers to stop and allow children to cross the street safely.

All drivers are required to stop when they see a school bus with the arm extended, whether a vehicle is facing the school bus (traveling in the opposite direction on the same street) or following a school bus from behind.

The school bus driver had directed the children to cross Verna Bethany Road, and after 2 children successfully crossed the road, a Kia traveling from the opposite direction struck and injured the 14-year-old boy while he was attempting to cross the street.

The impact of the collision caused the boy to be thrown into the left side of the school bus. While it has been reported that the boy is in serious condition, the nature of his injuries and his prognosis are unknown to the public.

The 19-year-old Sarasota woman driving the Kia is facing a criminal charge of failing to stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal.  It is unclear whether the woman will face additional charges, as the accident did result in serious injuries and the victim has not yet recovered.
