Suspect Fleeing Deputies Causes Multi-Vehicle Wreck on Olive Rd. in Augusta, Georgia

AUGUSTA, GA. – According to an online news report posted at, a suspect fleeing from deputies caused a multi-vehicle wreck on Olive Road in Augusta, Georgia. The news report indicates that several people were seriously injured in the wreck, including some children, and the suspect was placed under arrest.* 

The incident began in the evening at the intersection of Olive Road and Tubman Road. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and WRDW report that at approximately 7:45 p.m., deputies observed a vehicle running a stop sign at the intersection. The make and model of the vehicle were not included in the news report. When deputies attempted to pull the driver of the vehicle over, he sped away. 

Authorities say a chase ensued thereafter, running down Olive Road and toward Martin Luther King Boulevard. At the intersection with Martin Luther King Boulevard, deputies say the driver ran through a red stoplight and ended up crashing into several other vehicles. The report did not say how many other vehicles were involved in the accident or what types of vehicles they were.

WRDW reports that numerous people were injured in the wreck, some of whom were children. No ages or cities of residence for the injured persons were provided. All injuries were said to be serious but not life-threatening. 

The suspect driver was identified as a male. His age and city were not reported. Authorities were not initially sure why the driver fled from them, but during initial investigation, deputies learned that the vehicle he was driving at the time was a stolen rental car. The suspect was placed under arrest at the scene. WRDW reports that he is facing multiple criminal charges, but the report did not list the charges. 

Georgia State Patrol will be taking over the investigation. Troopers have not released additional information.
