8-Year-Old Girl on Bicycle is Struck by Vehicle and Injured in Florida Accident

August 17, 2019

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – As reported in an online news article published by, an 8-year-old girl suffered injuries when she was hit by a vehicle while riding her bicycle.*

An 8-year-old girl riding her bicycle was struck by a vehicle attempting to exit a parking lot.  The accident happened in the morning during the rush hour period when children are heading off to school.  Authorities indicate that the driver who struck the girl had stopped to wait for a clear roadway and the driver’s vehicle was partially blocking the sidewalk.

As the vehicle attempted to move forward, the 8-year-old girl rode by on her bicycle.  The vehicle hit the girl and knocked her off the bicycle.  The girl was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police are reminding all motorists to be mindful of school zone speeds, and children present both in school zones and at or near bus stops.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle accidents range in severity from extremely minor to severe and fatal. Bicycles must share the road with motorists, so any accident has the potential to cause serious injuries. Speed is a huge factor when determining the severity of an accident and the nature of the resulting injuries. Common causes of bicycle accidents that involve both children and adults include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Driver or rider inattention;
  • Speeding;
  • Riding a bicycle near a vehicle;
  • Failure to yield; and
  • Driving while intoxicated.

A good way to avoid being involved in a bicycle accident is to assume that a driver will not stop and that the driver does not see the bicyclist. Even if it seems obvious a car should stop, this does not always happen.  As such, being overly cautious is the best option to help prevent a potentially deadly accident.
