Pedestrian Tragically Killed in Backing-Up Accident in York County, South Carolina

YORK COUNTY, SC. – According to an online news report posted at, a pedestrian was tragically killed in a backing-up accident that occurred in York County, South Carolina. Authorities say that the accident took place as a vehicle was reversing out of a private driveway, according to the news report.*

The accident occurred during the late evening at a private residence located off of Ricks Road, by Sharon, South Carolina, in York County. South Carolina Highway Patrol and The Herald report that at approximately 10:30 p.m., a 2013 SUV was backing out of a private driveway and struck a pedestrian who had been walking near the edge of the driveway. The make and model of the SUV were not included in the news report, nor was the exact location of the accident. 

It is not clear at this time how the accident happened. Troopers indicated just that the SUV was reserving and ran over the pedestrian. It is not clear what direction the victim was walking. No potential factors leading or contributing to the accident were mentioned in the report. 

The Herald states that the pedestrian tragically died at the scene. The York County Coroner’s Office is investigating and has not yet released identifying information on the victim. It is unclear if next-of-kin has been notified. 

The driver of the SUV was not identified in the news report, and it is not clear how many people were riding in the vehicle at the time of the collision. No injuries to anyone in the SUV were reported. 

South Carolina Highway Patrol is managing the investigation of the collision. At the time that the report from The Herald was posted online, no additional information regarding the collision or the accident investigation had been released. It is unclear if charges will be pursued in the case.
