Pedestrian Seriously Injured After Hit by Van in Bay County, Florida

BAY COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report posted at, a pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a van in Bay County, Florida. Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol are handling the investigation of the incident, and it is not clear if charges will be pursued.* 

The accident occurred during the late morning on U.S. Highway 231 in Bay County. Florida Highway Patrol and the Panama City News Herald report that at about 11 a.m., a pedestrian was walking in the shoulder of the highway, pushing a bicycle. It is not clear what direction the pedestrian was walking, but he was on the paved shoulder of the southbound side of the highway.

At the same time, a Ford Econoline van was traveling south on U.S. 231, and Troopers say the van drifted into the shoulder and struck the pedestrian. It is not clear where exactly on the highway the collision took place, as a mile marker and nearby cross street were not listed in the news report. It is also not clear at this time what caused the van driver to travel into the highway shoulder. 

The Panama City News Herald reports that the pedestrian sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by emergency crews to Bay Medical Center. He was identified in the news report as a 54-year-old man from Panama City Beach. He is reportedly in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford van was identified as a 56-year-old man from Panama City. The report did not say whether the driver sustained any injuries in the accident or whether he was the only person riding in the van when the accident occurred. 

Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the collision. At the time of the report’s publishing, Troopers had not said whether charges were expected.
