Moncks Corner Train Accident Sends One Man to the Hospital

August 15, 2019

MONCKS CORNER, SC – According to an online news article published by, a 61-year-old man sustained injuries in an accident involving a Dodge pickup truck and an Amtrak train.*

The Moncks Corner Police Department states that a 61-year-old man was transported to an area hospital following an accident involving a collision between a 2016 Dodge pickup truck and an Amtrak train.

According to a Berkeley County Dispatch Supervisor, the accident happened at a railroad crossing along East Main Street (Highway 6) and East Railroad Avenue.  Shortly after the collision between the truck and Amtrak train, emergency personnel pulled the 61-year-old victim from the wreckage and transported him to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A bystander who was one of the first people to approach the crash site after the accident happened stated that the 61-year-old accident victim “had a little cut on top of his head,” and that he “walked onto the ambulance stretcher.”

A spokesperson for Amtrak stated that there was a total of 55 passengers on the train at the time of the collision with the Dodge pickup truck and confirmed that there were no reported injuries by any crew members or passengers.  The Amtrak train was carrying passengers from Savannah and traveling to New York.

Both East Main Street and the railroad tracks were temporarily closed while crews could clean up debris from the area.

South Carolina Train Accident Rose in 2018

Train accidents often result in severe injuries or death.  As such, when people survive train accidents with only minor injuries, they are the few lucky ones.   South Carolina sees its fair share of train accidents each year, but most of them have not resulted in fatalities.  In 2017, there were a total of three fatal train accidents and eighteen train accidents involving non-fatal injuries.

These numbers jumped considerably in 2018 when South Carolina had a total of nine fatal train accidents and 171 accidents involving non-fatal injuries.  The reason for the significant increase in the number of train accidents from 2017 to 2018 is unclear.
