Jury Orders Toyota to Pay $242.1 Million to Compensate Rear-End Collision Victims

August 15, 2019

TEXAS – According to an online news report at thetruthaboutcars.com, back in 2018, Toyota was ordered to pay $242.1 million by a Texas jury in order to compensate a family from Dallas that was involved in a rear-end collision back in 2016. The accident seriously injured two children rear-passengers in the family’s vehicle.*

The jury deliberated for 8 hours and rendered a verdict forcing Toyota to pay $242.1 million to a family that was involved in a rear-end collision.  The children seriously injured in the crash were ages 3 and 5, and were occupants in the rear of the family’s 2002 Lexus ES300.  The accident occurred on Dallas’ North Central Expressway.

The family was stopped in traffic where a Honda Pilot smashed into the rear of the family’s Lexus at an excessive rate of speed, causing the front seatbacks to collapse.  As a result, the two children located in the back seat of the vehicle sustained severe head trauma.

The lawsuit filed by the family alleged that Toyota designed the seatbacks with a specific focus on the safety of the occupants of the front seat over those in the rear.  This is a claim that Toyota heavily disputed.

“This is a danger that Toyota has known about,” the family’s attorney asserted. “This company has had plenty of time to design around these safety shortcomings or at least provide the public with warnings. Our children deserve better.”

“While we respect the jury’s decision, we remain confident that the injuries sustained were the result of factors specific to this very severe collision, not a defect in the design or manufacturing of the 2002 Lexus ES300,” a spokesperson from Toyota noted in a statement made to Reuters.

In light of the substantial verdict, Toyota is considering its legal options moving forward.
