Motorcyclist Hit By Car in Cypress Point, North Carolina

August 17, 2019

CYPRESS POINTE, NC – According to an online news report at, a motorcyclist was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital close to Vass earlier this week.*

The accident happened on United States Highway 1 in front of the Short Stop gas station in Lakeview during rush hour, per the Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue Department.  The motorcyclist was hit by a vehicle as it was exiting the parking lot of the Short Stop gas station.

Emergency personnel decided to take the motorcyclist by medical helicopter to an area trauma center.  The helicopter touched ground at the Vass ballfield.  Law enforcement has not released the name of the victim.  His condition remains unknown at this time.

There are no further details on the crash at this time.  The accident remains under investigation by the local police.

Motorcyclists who are experienced know that a leading cause of motorcycle crashes is due to what is referred to as “target fixation.”  This is a serious issue for motorcyclists and passenger vehicles alike.

According to an article at, target fixation is a “behavior in which a person becomes so focused on a singular object that they tend to ride (or drive) straight into it.”  This happens most commonly with motorcyclists given the fact that the steering on a motorcycle is more sensitive to the movements of the biker, whether they are miniscule or even subconscious.   Otherwise stated, it is much easier for a biker to steer their bike toward a certain object than it is to do so while operating a passenger vehicle.

Target fixation typically occurs in slowly moving, stop-and-go traffic.  Specifically, it is difficult to avoid zoning out when the vehicle in front of you travels slowly over small distances.  All it takes is to brake hard, which can cause a preventable minor accident.
