Panama City Beach Man in Critical Condition Following Accident on Highway 231

August 14, 2019

BAY COUNTY, FL – As reported in an online news article published by, a 54-year-old Panama City man was critically injured in an accident while he was pushing his bicycle on the outside paved shoulder of Highway 231.*

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 54-year-old Panama City man is in critical condition after being involved in an accident on southbound Highway 231.  The accident happened when the 54-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while he was pushing his bicycle on the outside paved shoulder of Highway 231 near Cemetery Road.

The FHP states that a 55-year-old Panama City man drifted out of the travel lane on southbound Highway 231 and onto the shoulder, slamming into the 54-year-old victim.  The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and remained in critical condition.

Because of the nature of the 54-year-old man’s injuries, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what caused this accident, and state that charges are pending in the matter.

Highway Shoulders are Notorious for Deadly Accidents

Parking on the shoulder of a highway or walking alongside the shoulder of a highway can be extremely dangerous, regardless of whether the highway is busy or not.  It only takes one vehicle veering off the road to cause a catastrophic accident. Drivers must always be alert for vehicles and pedestrians on the shoulder when traveling on highways, especially at a high rate of speed.

When cars break down, drivers and passengers may feel nervous about parking their vehicles on the shoulder of the highway.  However, sometimes drivers may have no other options.  A pedestrian or bicyclist traveling alongside the shoulder of a highway is also in danger of being severely injured or killed in an accident.

If possible, drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists should avoid stopping, parking, and traveling alongside the shoulder of highways.  When this is not possible, such individuals must be on high alert, as any vehicle has the potential to leave the road at any given time, creating a situation where an accident may happen that leads to injuries or death.
