Audi Recalling 144,000 Vehicles for Airbag Defects
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from silive.com, car manufacturer Audi is recalling more than 144,000 vehicles due to airbag issues. The carmaker says that the airbags on the front passenger’s side might not deploy in the event of a crash, even when someone is sitting in the passenger’s seat.*
The recall includes the following Audi models:
- 2018 S5 Cabriolet
- 2018 S4 Sedan
- 2018 A5 Sportback
- 2017, 2018 A4 Sedan
- 2017, 2018 A4 Allroad
- 2018 A5 Coupe
- 2018 S5 Sportback
- 2018 S5 Coupe
- 2018 A5 Cabriolet
All of these vehicles were manufactured leading up to July 31, 2019. Documents filed with NHTSA say that the passenger airbags in these vehicles might have an issue with the detection system, meaning that the system might malfunction and fail to detect that someone is sitting in the seat. The airbag will then fail to deploy if a crash occurs, as the vehicle does not think that anyone is in the seat.
Audi believes the issue stems from a connecting cable. When the issue occurs, an error message and light should come on in the instrument panel of the vehicle. The airbag indicator light should also say “Passenger Airbag Off.”
Audi will be notifying owners who have vehicles that are included in the recall. Owners will then be able to take their vehicles to technicians for repairs free of charge. Technicians will be installing new software in the airbag control units of affected vehicles and will adjust the diagnostic threshold of the systems. Communication regarding the recall should be sent to owners starting in the middle of September.
In the meantime, vehicle owners can check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission to see if their vehicles are included in an active recall. Owners will only need their VIN information to check on recalls.
