Pedestrian Tragically Killed in Suspected DUI Crash on Bluff Rd. in Columbia, South Carolina
COLUMBIA, SC. – According to an online news story reported at wistv.com, a pedestrian was tragically killed in a crash suspected to have involved driving under the influence. The Columbia Police Department says a driver has been arrested and criminally charged in connection with the deadly collision. The accident investigation is ongoing.*
The accident happened early in the morning on an unknown stretch of Bluff Road. The Columbia Police Department and WIS report that a pedestrian was walking on Bluff Road around midnight, when he was struck by a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. The Mitsubishi had been traveling east on the roadway prior to the collision. It is not clear what direction the pedestrian was walking or whether he was inside of a lane of travel or on the side of the road.
WIS reports that the pedestrian was tragically killed in the accident. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified him as a 76-year-old man. The victim’s city of residence was not included in the report.
No other injuries, including to the Mitsubishi driver, were reported following the collision. It appears the driver was alone in the vehicle when the accident happened. At some point during their investigation at the scene, authorities began to suspect that the driver of the Mitsubishi was under the influence of drugs or alcohol (the report does not say which). No information about a toxicology test was included in the report.
WIS states that the driver was arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence involving death. She was identified as a 22-year-old woman. Her city of residence was also not reported. At the time that the WIS report was published, the driver had not been in court for a bail hearing. The accident is still under investigation, and no additional information was included in the news story.
