Tragic, Fatal Hit-by-Car Accident at Apartment Complex in Dekalb County, Georgia

August 11, 2019

DEKALB COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at 11alive.com, a 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle in Dekalb County, Georgia.*

Police note that the 2-year-old was hit by a car in the late evening at the Austin Oaks Apartments located off of Glenwood Road. They indicate that an automobile was exiting the apartment complex when the child wandered off into the roadway. The child was playing with his siblings outside at the time of the accident.

“My nephew, he ran around the corner, and said, '[the boy] just got hit by the car,' and that’s when we all ran down here," the child’s aunt recalled.

Emergency personnel transported the child to an area hospital with critical injuries.  He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s aunt notes that the child loved Spider Man, Spongebob and ice cream, and that everyone loved the child in the apartment complex.   “The baby of the apartments," she asserted. "Everybody know him, he know everybody name.”

The boy apparently had been playing in an area that was a regular spot for kids who resided in the apartments.  According to the child’s family, there were no speed bumps and sidewalks around the area.  The child however, was not in the middle of the road when he was struck.

The driver of the vehicle is a woman who remained at the scene of the accident.  The police are still conducting an investigation of the accident, as it is not fully clear what happened.  It is also not clear as whether the driver will face charges for causing the death of the child.

“If you were just leaving the apartments, how could you not see him if you were paying attention to driving? When there were so many kids right here," the child’s aunt questioned. "Everybody was right here.”
