Tragic, Fatal Railway Crossing Accident in Flowery Branch, Georgia
HALL COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at wsbtv.com, a teenager died and another sustained serious injuries after a train crashed into a van at a railway crossing in Flowery Branch, Georgia earlier this week.*
According to a surveillance camera from an area business, it shows the van attempting to cross the railroad tracks while the arms were going down at Lights Ferry Road and Atlanta highway.
The video shows that the driver, a male, was exiting the vehicle right before it collided with the train. The accident occurred in the early morning hours. This man was not injured in the crash.
After the accident, two teenagers in the van were transported to a local hospital with severe injuries, per a spokesperson from the Flowery Branch Police Department. One of the passengers, a 16-year-old male, later died as a result of the extent of his injuries. The other individual injured is a 17-year-old male.
Approximately four hours following the accident, another train passed through the intersection as emergency crews were repairing the broken signals.
The driver initially thought that he was able to cross the railroad tracks as the arms were going down in front of him. However, his vehicle became stuck and he could not go anywhere due to the fact that there were cars around him. He was mistaken in his belief that he had enough room to drive through the tracks without getting hit.
The team of investigators is looking to speak with the 17-year-old driver to find out more about what exactly happened. The driver is facing charges of improper stopping on a roadway and second-degree vehicular homicide. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.
